2011 Census

The Census takes place on 9 August.  The information gleaned from the census gives us the best information we have as to the scale of homelessness in Australia.

On the night of the last census in 2006, there were 105,000 Australians who were homeless.  However, it is interesting to note that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is considering changing the methodology behind the counting of the homeless population.  This could significantly change the numbers.

Everyone should complete a census form on the night.  At Youthcare we will be assisting the residents to complete their forms.

It’s important that all people who have no usual permanent address write ‘None’ in the ‘Suburb/Locality’ box for the usual place of residence question on the Census form, regardless of where they are staying on Census night.

This is especially important for people who are staying in temporary accommodation; such as couch-surfing at friends’ houses, staying at emergency accommodation, refuges or hostels, caravan parks, motels, or with family or friends.
